The Atletico Madrid Experience

Atletico's Wanda Metropolitano

They say some of the magic is lost when football clubs move grounds, but in the case of the Wanda Metropolitano, home of Atletico Madrid, it has created a real wow factor.

Host of the 2019 Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, the 68,000-capacity stadium has been home to Los Colchoneros since the beginning of the 2017/18 season.

Built with the highest standards of comfort, security and visibility, the Wanda Metropolitano is one of the best places to watch football in the world. Its bowl feel with spacious seats offering a great view of the action no matter where you are in the ground.

The club decided to prioritise the fan experience over increasing the capacity, meaning more space between the rows of seats and easier access to the facilities of the stadium.

A fantastic atmosphere is generated underneath the stadium roof, which provides coverage for 96% of the seats

It sits on the site of the former Madrid Olympic Stadium, part of an unsuccessful bid to host the 1997 World Athletics Championships, a stadium that was closed in 2004 before Atletico bought it in 2013 to build a new stadium to replace the obsolete Vicentre Calderon Stadium.

Modern-stadia can also take advantage of technology, making it a core part of the build and ensuring its integration appropriately, a challenge that older stadia struggle with. The Wanda Metropolitano boasts fantastic innovation, with a 360-degree ribbon board that comprises 530sq metres of LED screens to offer content to fans.

Cellular data is guaranteed for everyone, meaning 4G usage is not a problem for fans, something which is often a frustrating problem at well-populated events around the world. Card payments are accepted in the concourse, making buying refreshments much easier and quicker than in other grounds.

There are three video scoreboards and more than 800 large format LG screens throughout the stadium, as well as a large LED curtain screen on the outside of the stadium.

It is the first stadium in the world to be 100 percent LED with lighting, while its spectacular roof uses Philips’ VayaFlood dymanic lighting, which displays 16 million colours.

All that enables it to dominate the local area, standing out as the behemoth home of one of Europe’s big clubs. The journey from the Metro station to the ground is dominated by Atletico Madrid, decorated with images from the club’s history and their former homes at the Calderon, the Retiro and the old Metropolitano, giving you a real feel to the club.

Around the concourse are metallic plaques dedicated to every player who has made 100 appearances for the club, including Diego Simeone and Fernando Torres.

The priority was clearly the fan experience, and they have done just that, not only to sell Atletico Madrid tickets and create atmosphere, but to maximise revenue too.

With the biggest of clubs to compete within Spain alone, meeting growing fan expectations and giving them the best interactive experience was key to the success of Wanda Metropolitano.
